Sexual Assault Statistics
All people are potential victims, regardless of gender, age, race, religion, sexual orientation, education or physical description.
- Police reported sexual assaults in 2021 are at their highest in violent crimes since 1996 ¹.
- In 2019 self-reported violent victimization is twice as high in women than men and women experience sexual assault five times higher ².
- Survey of Safety in Public and Private Spaces found that women are more likely than men to be sexually assaulted or to experience unwanted sexual behavior in public, online, or in the workplace ³.
- 1 in 3 women and 1 in 8 men experience unwanted sexual behavior in public (being younger and non-heterosexual orientation increased the risk) ³.
- 3 in 10 women were targeted by inappropriate sexual behavior at work ³.
- More than 11 million Canadians have been physically or sexually assaulted since the age of 15.30% higher prevalence of sexual assault among women than 8% for men ³.
